My buddy @djklick hit me up about something I hadn’t thought about in years. He DM’d me – he always wanted some ‘Catapults’ and I should do a post on them. My first thought was…’What the hell are catapults?’ And then another message came through – ‘LA Gears and/or Dymacels’. ⁣

For those of y’all that don’t know – LA Gear was this sneaker brand that came out in the late 80’s…I’m assuming they saw what happened with Michael Jordan and Nike and Magic Johnson & Larry Bird with Converse and wanted to try their hand at celebrity endorsements. ⁣

I did a bit of googling and saw that they put out ads with all kinds of celebrities – almost ALL of them quite representative of LA and Hollywood and Showtime at the time.⁣

The ‘Catapults’, I want to say I owned a pair of these because I distinctly remember what the ‘catapult’ looked and felt like, but maybe a friend or a friend of a friend had a pair and I was just checking them out. Apparently the Catapults were Karl Malone’s Signature shoe. ⁣

And if you weren’t alive at the time, Karl Malone was a BEAST. Career averages for this guy included 25 points and 10 rebounds per game – I know that doesn’t sound like much in the context of today, but at the time – that was a lot. ⁣

Kinda dope, but I also saw a shot of the Catapults worn by Wesley Snipes next to Billy Hoyle in ‘White Men Can’t Jump’…swipe for all the photos.⁣

Anyone else know anything else about Karl Malone’s Catapults? Anyone out there own a pair? Can anyone add to this conversation? ⁣
