1/ A few years ago, I got my hands on some of those super clean Flightposite retros – the eggplants, the golds, the silvers, and the blacks…I got within a half size of my regular size and paid anywhere from $55 (for the silvers) to $150 (for the eggplants). I got each pair off NikeTalk or ISS and when I realized I just didn’t wear them, I decided to sell them on eBay.
I listed all 4 pairs over the course of a few days at a significant markup from what I bought them for and each pair sold within 24 hours. As I was packing the shoes up, one thing struck me as really interesting – each and every single buyer had an address in Mongolia. Yes, THE Mongolia. Most were being delivered to Ulaanbaatar – the capital of Mongolia.
Within a week of these pairs having been sold – I received SEVERAL messages from people with broken english asking me to let them know if I came across any more flightposites. Everyone wanted flightposites.
To me – this was super odd. One of the pairs – the Eggplants – I sold for $350 – close to $398 shipped. And that was in probably 2013. If you don’t know, Mongolia is considered an ‘emerging country’, and it’s not exactly known for its economic output. Back around that time – I wouldn’t have ever considered buying ANY pair of shoes for that amount of money, and I live in one of the richest countries in the world. What was going on in Mongolia that people were tripping over themselves to buy $350 shoes from the US?
