So…with everything going on, I was thinking of my TOP 3 Kobe shoes and decided to write a bit on each. This is post 1 of 3:
Coming in at number 3…the Adidas Crazy 8. I don’t remember when I first saw these but I do remember being drawn to them immediately. There was nothing special about that first colorway – black, white, hints of purple and gold (lakers, duh), but for whatever reason I liked the oversized stripes. I’m pretty sure the first pair came out in 1998 or so, and it had that crazy Adidas logo that was like a face and the bottom of a foot. Pretty sure Keyshawn Johnson used the same logo for the Cross Training version and I immediately thought it was clever. I like clever logos (but not *too* clever).
The sole was unlike any sole I had seen before…it really looked like the footprint I’d have coming out of a pool or walking in the snow…I was curious how they had done that as most of the soles up to that point seemed to be single unit vulcanized soles (except, of course, the Jordan XI).
Anyway, I came across an Ostrich skin SAMPLE pair of these at a flea market a few years back…paid $20 for them, wore them a handful of times and realized I just didn’t wear them enough to justify keeping them. It took me a while to sell ‘em, but I eventually pulled $100 or so for them…kind of a paltry amount given the circumstances now, but such is life.
I feel like this shoe was built like a tank but had a low profile toe box, which is a big deal for me. I never liked the bulky-toed shoes (I’m looking at EVERY Lebron model) and a number of those vaulted 90’s signature lines. The ‘8’ just below the first lace hole was also a nice touch, IMO.
