The Jordan VI’s were the first pair I ever convinced my mom to buy for me. She bought them for my birthday and I was so amped to get them. A day or two after I got them, my cousins and I walked down to the river and went swimming. As we were about to leave (and I had my Jordans on), this guy comes roaring down the path on the other side of on his quad and decides he’s going to try to cross the river. He gets about halfway across before he realizes it’s too deep and he starts freaking out. Jumps off, starts trying to push his quad across…after a minute of watching this dude struggle (remember, I was like 11 years old) he starts screaming ‘hey can you guys help me out here?’ – we run to the waters edge to try to pull this thing in and I look down and I start sinking down into the mud…my brand new Jordans, already dirty as hell.
To be honest I was kinda shocked and pleasantly surprised with the number of comments I got on yesterday’s post about [my] first Jordans…Apparently a lot of you also got VI’s as your first. it wasn’t like a TON of comments, but enough to make me pause and think about it.
These initially caught my eye because when I watched Jordan torch the Lakers, the colors just popped. And Jordan was a killer. And they looked mean as hell. And I’m pretty sure I associated ‘mean as hell’ with that color combination because those colors made me think of a movie I had seen around that same time: The Terminator. I know that movie came out in like ‘84 and the Jordans came out in like ‘91, but that was the first ‘R’ rated movie I ever saw. I grew up in a household that didn’t have cable.. I remember thinking ‘the colors are the same’ and when I found out the actual name of the color on the shoe box was ‘infrared’ all I could think about was that movie poster. ‘The Terminator’ was a terrifying movie for an 11 year old and when I think back on that movie the black and the pinkish-red fill my memory of almost every scene…every time I see that movie poster, I think of VI’s. And every time I see VI’s, I think of that movie. Tell me your Jordan VI stories…
