(1/12) So the year was 2013 and my girlfriend and I had just moved down to San Francisco after spending the prior two years up in Tahoe, and I was fresh on my thrift store grind. If you don’t spend much time in SF, the thrift stores are of legend. Nothing like NY thrift stores (which absolutely suck). If you know where to look in SF – you can find gold. We lived near the Ocean – Ocean Beach to be exact – and I worked downtown SF. I would frequently ride my bike to work and would hit 3-4 of my favorite thrift shops at least once a week on my way home.
At these thrift shops, I’d search out sneakers. Mostly sneakers I could resell. I remember finding a pair of Sample Air Max 1 Aztecs, a pair of Mowabb Huaraches, and a pair of Ray Allen XIII’s…I found and sold hundreds of pairs in the time we lived there…nothing major, but I was still pulling $100+ per pair on thrift store pickups, so it was a nice bit of cash for drinking and eating out in the city. And it was fun for me. The flip was *always* fun for me.
I was also buying stuff online from people who didn’t know the going rate so I’d just flip it on eBay. I’d market it correctly, take better pics, and clear another $100+ on an average sale.
One day, I purchased a pair of Flightposite III samples – in my size off of Niketalk. There was a snafu at the post office and I didn’t actually receive them for close to 6 months, which is a story for another time. But I bought these because I wanted to wear them, and I did, but once I realized I didn’t wear them enough I decided to sell. I’m pretty sure I bought them for $120 shipped and knew I could sell them for quite a bit more. When I decided to sell, I took pics and listed them on ebay. These are pics of the actual auction I listed them on…asking price? $350. To be continued…
