What was the first thing YOU started collecting? When I was a kid, I didn’t really watch baseball before I started collecting baseball cards. I grew up in a house that didn’t have cable TV so collecting became a pretty big form of entertainment for me. I started collecting baseball cards because my cousins (huge baseball fans) were really into it. 1987 Topps were the first baseball cards I had ever seen and they were the only ones available at the local stores. Soon after I started collecting, I knew all about people I had never even heard about. I knew Will Clark and Kevin Mitchells and Matt Williams’ stat lines…but…more importantly (to me)…was that I knew what their cards were worth. I tracked my cards, I tracked their prices, and tracked cards I thought would go up in value. I made every attempt in every situation to ‘trade up’. Baseball cards were easy to trade. No one cared all that much about the ‘condition’ of the card as long as it wasn’t completely beat or destroyed…especially if it was WAY old. What was the first thing YOU started collecting?
