For my ninth birthday, my mom and dad bought me a complete set of the 1989 Fleer Set – complete with the Ken Griffey Jr. Rookie Card. I didn’t know all that much at the time about what owning a complete set meant, other than it meant I had a few standout cards and a bunch of no-namers that really didn’t mean a damn thing in the grand scheme of things. I made it a point to figure out which cards were worth something and which ones were not – even though I knew I’d never take the set apart. As I was going line-by-line through my Beckett, I came across an entry that I wasn’t all that familiar with…there were 2 or 3 versions of the “Billy Ripkin” card…one said ‘Black Box’, one said ‘White Box’ and the last one said ‘Face’ or ‘Error’ or ‘FFace’ or something like that. I’m not sure exactly what it said and I’m not sure exactly what the price differential was – but I pulled my card from the set and had no idea what the hell it meant. There were 2 or 3 versions of the card listed and one was definitely worth more than the other two. It must’ve taken me months or even years to figure out the difference between the cards, but when I found out I thought it was the funniest thing ever. Apparently, as Billy Ripkin was going to take the picture for his card, someone wrote the words ‘Fuck Face’ on the bottom of a bat and handed it to him for the picture. I think Fleer accidently let a few slide by and when they realized it was there they added a white box to cover ‘Fuck Face’ on some cards and a black box to cover ‘Fuck Face’ on the rest of the cards. I’m pretty sure I had the black box card and don’t think I ever had a ‘Fuck Face’ card in my hands until I saw it at a shop a few years later. Anyway..kinda funny to see the difference in price on eBay to this day. $35 for a 9.5/10 Fuck Face and $75 for a 10/10 Fuck Face.
